⚡ Save any workflow as a one-word command (skills)

A skill turns a workflow you've explained twenty times into a one-word command. Under the hood it's just a folder with a SKILL.md file — instructions Claude loads on demand. Fifteen minutes to set up, then "/brand-post beach photo" does what used to take three paragraphs of explaining.

What a skill actually is

A SKILL.md file holds two things: a description (when the skill should trigger) and instructions (the workflow, standards, and examples). Claude reads it when the task matches — you invoke it by name with a slash command, or it triggers automatically when relevant. Skills live in your Claude settings (Capabilities) on claude.ai, or in the skills folder for Claude Code.

Build your first: the brand-post skill

Have Claude write it — it knows the format:

Create a SKILL.md for a skill called "brand-post". When I invoke it with a topic or photo description, it should produce a social post in my brand voice. Include in the instructions: my business [details], voice rules [plain-spoken, no hype words, one CTA], format rules [under 80 words, hook first line], and two example posts so it learns the pattern: [paste two of your best]. Write the description so it triggers when I ask for social content.

Save it per your platform's steps (Claude will walk you through where it goes). Test it, then tighten: every time output misses, add one rule to the file. Skills compound exactly like the Jarvis instructions do.

Five skills worth building this month

  1. /brand-post — the one above.
  2. /quote — turns job details into your quote format, with your pricing rules baked in.
  3. /recap — meeting notes → action items in your format.
  4. /reply — customer messages → drafts in your voice, with your policies loaded.
  5. /report — raw numbers → your weekly report.

Skill vs. Project vs. shortcut — which do I want?

Shortcut: one-line behavior tweak (tone, format). Project: standing context for an area of your life. Skill: a repeatable workflow with rules and examples, portable across chats. If you'd explain it the same way every time, it's a skill.

The test for skill-worthiness: have you typed roughly the same instructions three times? That's the threshold. Third time, stop and make the skill instead.
