🧸 Two weekend apps: packing list + bedtime stories

The fastest way to get good at building with AI is to build something for your own life — stakes low, motivation real, feedback instant. Here are two weekend builds that teach real skills: a packing app that knows your destination, and a bedtime-story app narrated in your own voice.

Build 1: The smart packing app

An app where you enter destination + dates + trip type, and get a tailored packing list you can check off.

Build a single-file web app called [name]. Input screen: destination, dates, trip type (work / beach / camping / family), who's going (adults, kids). Output: a packing checklist organized by category, adjusted for the trip type and rough seasonal weather for that destination and month, with kid items when kids are included. Checklist state saves in the browser so it survives refresh. Clean mobile-first design in my colors: [hex]. Include an "add your own item" field.

What it teaches: inputs driving logic, saved state, and the iterate-in-plain-English loop ("beach trips should always include reef-safe sunscreen"). Ship it to your phone's home screen and use it on your next real trip — real use exposes what a demo never does.

Build 2: The bedtime-story app in your voice

Two-part build: Claude writes personalized stories; your cloned voice reads them — for nights you're traveling or working late.

You write bedtime stories for [child's name], age [X], who loves [dinosaurs, tractors, space]. Stories: 4-5 minutes read aloud, [child] as the gentle hero, cozy pacing that winds DOWN toward the end, no scary turns, always ending safe at home. When I give you a theme, write the story plus a one-line moral.

Generate the story, run it through your voice clone, save the audio files into a simple player page (ask Claude to build "a single-file audio library page with big friendly buttons, kid-proof"). What it teaches: chaining two AI tools into one product — the core pattern behind most real AI apps.

Kids and AI voices: be present the first plays, and be upfront with your kids that it's "robot daddy/mommy" reading — small kids accept this happily, and honesty matters more as they grow.
Personal apps are the training ground. Every skill here — spec, state, chaining, iteration — is exactly what business builds need. You just learned it where failure costs nothing.
