🛒 The Claude skills and plugins worth installing

Beyond skills you write yourself, there's a growing ecosystem of ready-made skills and plugins you can install. Most add noise, a handful add real capability. Here's how the ecosystem fits together and which categories are worth your time.

The lay of the land (correct terms, quickly)

• Skills — instruction packages (SKILL.md) that teach Claude a workflow. Install via Settings → Capabilities on claude.ai, or the skills folder in Claude Code.
• Plugins — bundles that can include skills, connectors, and commands, installed in Claude Code via the /plugin command from marketplaces (Anthropic maintains official ones; community marketplaces exist too).
• MCP connectors — live connections to outside tools; different animal, covered in the MCP guide.

The categories that earn their install

1. Document creation skills — the ones that produce real Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint decks, and PDFs. If you ever deliver files to anyone, these are the highest-value installs available. (Anthropic ships official versions.)
2. Your platform's skills — if a tool you live in (design apps, project managers, CRMs) publishes an official skill or plugin, take it. Purpose-built beats general.
3. Development bundles — for Claude Code users: review workflows, testing helpers, and language-specific packs from the official marketplace.
4. Your own five — honestly, the skills from the setup guide will out-earn most installs, because they know YOUR business.

How to vet before installing

Skills and plugins are instructions Claude will follow, so treat installs like hiring: check the source (official > well-known dev > random upload), read the SKILL.md — it's plain text, actually read it — and prefer skills that do one clear job. Skip anything that wants sweeping access it can't justify, and uninstall what you haven't used in a month; unused skills still occupy Claude's attention when it picks tools.
