📟 Build a $10k-looking dashboard, free

A dashboard that pulls your business numbers into one clean screen used to be enterprise software. Now it's an afternoon with an AI coding tool (Claude Code, Google's Antigravity-style agentic IDEs, or AI app builders — all work) and a spreadsheet. Here's the build that looks like $10k and costs zero.

Step 1: Decide the five numbers

A dashboard is an argument about what matters. Before any tool:

Help me pick my dashboard's numbers. My business: [what you do]. Decisions I make weekly: [pricing, scheduling, ad spend...]. From everything I COULD track, which 5 numbers most directly feed those decisions? For each: why it matters, where the data lives today, and a red/yellow/green threshold. Reject vanity metrics.

Step 2: One spreadsheet as the source of truth

Keep it dumb and reliable: one sheet, one row per week, one column per number. Updating it takes five minutes on Friday (or export it from your tools). Fancy pipelines can come later; most never need to.

Step 3: The build prompt

Build a single-file HTML dashboard that reads my data from a CSV I paste in or load alongside it. Layout: 5 KPI cards across the top (current value, change vs. last week as an arrow, red/yellow/green vs. thresholds: [list]), a 12-week trend line chart for each number below, and a notes column on the right pulled from my sheet. Dark theme, my colors [hex], generous spacing, readable at a glance from across a room. It must work fully offline in a browser, no accounts, no server.

Iterate in plain English: "the cards need bigger numbers," "chart the leads and sales on the same axis." Ten minutes of taste adjustments is what separates it from a template.

Step 4: Put it where you'll see it

Bookmark it on every device, or dedicate a cheap tablet on the office wall. A dashboard you don't see daily is a file, not a tool.

Verify the math once. Check each card against the spreadsheet by hand the first week. AI-generated calculation bugs are rare but confident — one manual pass buys permanent trust.

Monthly upgrade ritual: each month, add ONE thing you found yourself wishing for. Dashboards built in small honest increments get used; dashboards built impressive on day one get abandoned.
