Your Google Business Profile is the most under-used free marketing tool on the internet. For local searches it often matters more than your website. Here's how to make it work harder with an hour of AI-assisted setup and 15 minutes a week.

One-time setup (60 min)

1. Rewrite your business description

Write a Google Business Profile description for my business (750 characters max). Business: [what you do, town, years in business, what you're known for]. Include the services people actually search for, written naturally — no keyword stuffing. Friendly, confident, no clichés like "we go above and beyond."

2. Fill the Q&A section yourself

Most owners don't know you can post your own questions and answers. Seed the ten your customers always ask:

List the 10 questions customers most likely ask a [type of business] before choosing one (hours, pricing approach, service area, turnaround, etc.). Then write a clear 2-3 sentence answer for each based on this info: [paste your details].

3. Audit your categories and services

Ask AI: "What Google Business Profile categories and services should a [business type] list? Rank by search value." Then check yours against the list.

The 15-minute weekly habit

  1. One post per week — an offer, a tip, or a job you just finished (photo posts win).
  2. Reply to every review — see the reply prompts in the local marketing playbook.
  3. Add 2-3 photos — real work, real people. Profiles with regular photos get dramatically more clicks and calls.
Write this week's Google Business Profile post: [what happened this week — a finished job, new stock, a seasonal tip]. Under 100 words, one call to action, no hashtags.
Never buy reviews or post fake ones. Google detects patterns and the penalty (suspended profile) is far worse than a slow trickle of real reviews. Just ask happy customers at the moment they're happiest.
Fast win: text your last 10 happy customers a direct review link (find it under "Ask for reviews" in your profile dashboard). Expect 3-4 to actually do it — that's a great week.
